WHY DO I HAVE DRY SKIN AND WHAT CAN I DO?

Between indoor heating systems and the harsh cold winds of winter, your skin can be left without any moisture to stay looking healthy. These conditions tend to dehydrate your face due to the lack of humidity in the environment. Dry skin can also be caused by using products that can strip natural oils, particularly those with alcohol, astringents, and harsh acids. Moreover, because we usually don’t get as much sunlight during the colder months, people with inflammatory skin conditions like eczema may experience more flare-ups than usual.

The difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin

Dehydrated skin can look tired with fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles that become more distinguished due to a lack of moisture that adds plumpness. Dry skin, on the other hand, tends to be flaky or scaly, it may become red, more sensitive, and irritates easily.

Skip harsh cleansers

Avoid cleansers with drying ingredients, like fragrances or additives. These can weaken the already compromised skin. Instead, opt for soap-free alternatives. You can also use a cleanser that is pH-balanced to match the slightly acidic pH of the skin.

Prevention is the best treatment

Drinking water throughout the day and staying hydrated may improve the skin’s overall appearance. Furthermore, eating water-rich fruits and vegetables like pineapples and broccoli also helps to keep the skin hydrated.
